A. English Department


The College of Foreign Languages of Hainan Normal University has a long history of setting up English majors, which was founded in 1987. It is an important base for training and training English teachers in secondary schools in Hainan Province. It also undertakes the task of training practical English talents, advanced English talents and basic education research.

English majors have three directions: English teacher training, academic research and business English. At present, there are comprehensive English teaching and research rooms, language skills teaching and research rooms, language, literature and culture teaching and research rooms, English teaching theory and methods teaching and research rooms, continuing education teaching and research rooms, English language education research rooms.

English majors now have a team of teachers with young and middle-aged professional backbone as the core and complementary professional structure advantages. At present, there are 36 teachers (including 3 foreign teachers), including 3 professors, 16 associate professors and 10 doctors. There are 1131 students in school.

In 2014, the English Department and the Australian Vocational Education Institute signed an overseas internship program. So far, three internships have been sent to six students in Australia. At the same time, many students participate in the exchange program of Japan Hyogo Education University, Korea Antarctic University and Taiwan Changhua Normal University every year.

In recent years, English majors have insisted on promoting scientific research through discipline construction, and made great progress in scientific research. In the past four years, nearly 48 scientific research projects have been undertaken, including 3 at the national level, more than 45 at the provincial level, 9 monographs and 76 papers, including 43 papers in core journals.

II. Location and Target

In many years of school-running experience, gradually formed its own characteristics of school-running positioning and training objectives.

(1) Orientation of running a school

The orientation of school-running type: to build a teaching and research-oriented specialty with distinctive teacher education, professional language + small language characteristics.

The orientation of discipline construction: in line with the spirit of "learning Chinese and Western, academic freedom, cultivating foreign language talents", adhere to the concept of carrying forward the characteristics of teacher education and coordinating the development of teachers'and non-teachers' majors. Taking the construction of teaching staff as the foundation, specialty construction as the leader, discipline construction as the support, social demand as the guidance, and constantly improving the comprehensive strength and overall level, English majors are ensured to be in the leading position in the province and strive to rank in the middle-to-upper level of similar majors in the whole country.

Service oriented positioning: it will continue to maintain the core position of high level English teacher training in basic education in Hainan Province, and provide advanced foreign language service talents for other areas such as business, foreign affairs and translation in Hainan Province, so as to provide high-quality foreign language teachers and foreign language services for the economic and social development of the country and Hainan, especially for the "one belt and one road" and "international tourism island".

(2) Training objectives

The goal of training English majors is to cultivate high-quality applied foreign language talents with solid foreign language professional skills and knowledge, as well as relevant knowledge and profound humanistic literacy.

English majors aim to cultivate English professionals with solid English language skills, good humanistic literacy, literary quality and humanistic feelings, strong intercultural communication skills, speculative and innovative abilities, innovative spirit and practical abilities, as well as in English education, foreign affairs, commerce and trade, which can adapt to the economic construction and social development of the country and Hainan Province. The field is engaged in practical work, especially those capable of serving the "one belt and one way" and "international tourism island".

(1) Quantity and structure

At present, there are 36 teachers (including 3 foreign teachers), including 3 professors, 16 associate professors and 10 doctors. There are 1131 students in school.

At present, there is a big gap in the teaching staff, especially the teachers with higher professional titles and higher educational background, which has a certain impact on the normal teaching work and subject development.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, English majors will further insist on introducing and nurturing both, focusing on the needs of discipline construction and development, vigorously introducing subject leaders, academic backbone talents and overseas doctorates, actively adjusting the age, educational background and title structure of the teaching staff, so as to create a high-quality team of teachers with noble ethics, excellent professional skills, excellent structure and pioneering innovation. By 2020, we will strive to promote one professor per year, 3-4 associate professors per year, introduce or train 2-3 teachers with doctoral degrees, send 4-6 students per year to overseas famous universities or scientific research institutions for further study or cooperative research, strive for 15% of professors, 48% of associate professors, and 25% of teachers with doctoral degrees.

By 2020, 360 English majors will be enrolled in each session, with a teacher-student ratio of 1:20.

(2) Educational and teaching level

Full-time teachers of English major devote themselves to improving their education and teaching level. In the past four years, English major teachers have won one first prize, one third prize in 2014, one third prize in 2015, one third prize in 2014, one second prize and one third prize in 2015, one third prize in 2014, one third prize in 2015 and one second prize and one third prize in 2015 respectively. Since 2014, the scientific research achievements of teachers have increased steadily, and there has never been any problem of teachers'morality and style, and the discipline construction has developed healthily and orderly.

 

B. Japanese Department

 

1.    History

The Japanese Language major of Hainan Normal University was established in 2003 and began to recruit nationwide in the fall of the year.

It was the first Japanese undergraduate major in Hainan Province. It has a Japanese language department and is affiliated with the Foreign Languages College. It is responsible for normal teaching management, including Japanese major, Japanese for second foreign language, Japanese for first foreign language, etc., and for practical education and learning, graduation thesis, domestic and overseas practical education and teaching inspection. The Japanese major has 160-240 students from all over the country every year. The Japanese language and literature is classified as secondary-discipline. Master degree of Japanese translation major has begun enrolling students in 2019.

 

2. Objectives

With undergraduate education as the main part, we also gradually develop graduate education. Our major is based on the background of Hainan Normal University and the unique geographical location of Hainan Province. It is also based on the principle of “located in Haikou, serving Hainan, facing the whole country and radiating Southeast Asia”. To serve the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, we create discipline characteristics, strengthen discipline construction, practical curriculum teaching, and develop the cooperation with overseas organizations. We will gradually form the trinity training model which includes "domestic + overseas diversification model", "regional culture, culture comparison + translation", and "intercultural communication ability + business travel". Our aim is to train foreign language professionals with practical and multiple abilities. 

 

3. Major Orientation

        "To survive by quality, to develop by characteristics" is the guiding ideology. The tasks set for the orientation of the major are: to strengthen professional basic teaching and the ability of applied linguistic practice, to pay attention to the students' innovation consciousness and speculative ability training.

(1)   Multiple Ability Training

We intend to improve the construction of the academic curriculum and to strengthen students' intercultural communication skills. To achieve that aim our major cultivate comprehensive foreign language talents with proficiency in Japanese language and related applied knowledge, adapt to social development needs, and have international vision, innovation consciousness and social responsibility in education, translation, foreign affairs, economy and trade, tourism and management.

 

(2) Professional Features

Our major’s characteristics are formed through the educational parts of the training mode, curriculum setting, student internship, extracurricular practice activities, etc. We adopt a multi-disciplinary compound training method to meet the needs of the society, and strengthen the Japanese undergraduate education.

(3) Domestic and Overseas Diversified Training Mode

With the concept of international cooperative education and joint training, we have established a stable overseas practical education and a paid social practical base at present. These two systems reflect the characteristics of diversified personnel training in many aspects. Students have experienced great progress through language learning and paid practice in Japan, and the high rate of postgraduate entrance examination core is highly evaluated abroad.

 

4. Teaching Team

The Japanese major currently has ten professional teachers, including one professor, one associate professor, six lecturers, one assistant professor, and one foreign teacher. Among the teachers, there are three doctorates, six masters and one foreign teacher.

During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, Japanese majors focused on the construction and development of the subject. We have vigorously introduced leaders of the disciplines and academic backbone talents with overseas study background, actively adjusted the age and title structure of the faculty, and created a morally noble and specialized team with high quality and innovation.

 

5. Teaching and Research

(1) Teaching and Curriculum

Japanese education starts from very basic level. The basic stage is to build language foundation and cultural structure. The advanced stage is to cultivate the comprehensive ability for comparing the Chinese-Japanese language and culture, Chinese-Japanese translation skills and intercultural communication skills. The main courses are Basic Japanese, Advanced Japanese, Japanese Profile, Japanese Listening, Japanese Speaking, Japanese Writing, Japanese Reading, Japanese-Chinese and Chinese-Japanese Translation, Japanese Literature, Introduction to Japanese Culture, Intercultural Communication, Business Japanese, and Comparison of Chinese and Japanese Culture. Professional practical courses include thesis writing, education apprenticeship, graduation internship and overseas practice, etc. The teaching practice activities at the provincial level and above include joining the Chinese Cup Japanese Speech Competition, the Chinese Japanese Composition Competition, and the Provincial College Student Translation Competition.

 

(2) Scientific Research Achievements and Exchanges

The teachers of the Japanese Department have presided over seven projects at the provincial level and above, of which five were completed and two are under research. We have published more than 50 academic papers, including five CSSCI papers and three Chinese-core papers. We have published four monographs, three translations, one compilation, and two textbooks.

Since the establishment of the department in 2003, four Japanese full-time teachers have visited Japan and received overseas training. From 2014, the department began to send one or two teachers to receive overseas short-term study and experience overseas exchange.

 

C. Translation Department

I General Introduction 

The translation department of Hainan Normal University is young and energetic. Its undergraduate specialty was approved by Ministry of Education in June 2015, and the first translation class was enrolled in September 2016. Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2017 and enrolled in 2019. In December 2018, Hainan Normal University and University of Strathclyde (UK) signed cooperation projects for undergraduates' overseas practice, graduates’ 4+1, and MTI 1+1, involving cooperation in Business Translation, Interpretation and other professional fields.

 

II Brief Introduction to the Undergraduate Specialty

According to the principle of enrollment in large categories, the undergraduates majoring in translation study the basic courses of School of Foreign Languages systematically in the first year, and begin to divert to the Department of Translation in the first semester of their sophomore year, focusing on relevant basic and professional courses.

(1) Educating objectives

Translation major aims to educate students into compound talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique, having a solid bilingual (English and Chinese) foundation and translation theory foundation, having a good understanding of Chinese, British and American cultures, having the potential to be applied translators, and engaging in theoretical research, administrative management and cultural dissemination at home and abroad.

(2) Main courses

Comprehensive English, Advanced English, Listening, English Writing, A Brief Introduction to English Speaking Countries, English Literature, American Literature, Introduction to English Linguistics, Translation Theory and Practice, Business Translation, Literary Translation, Interpretation, Translation Practice, Translation Criticism and Appreciation, Computer Aided Translation, Ancient Chinese, Modern Chinese, etc.

(3) Employment direction

Graduates majoring in translation may engage in foreign affairs reception, business, tourism and other interpreting and translation work in government departments, enterprises and institutions; they may enter institutions such as scientific research institutes to engage in foreign language teaching, translation teaching and translation-related scientific research and management; they may enter publishing houses, cultural communication companies, language service companies or newspapers to engage in foreign-related news editing and culture.  

(4) Professional orientation

Depending on relevant spirit and requirements of the management of institutions of higher learning put forward by the state educational administration department, standing at the height of the demand of regional economic and social development for the quality and quantity of all kinds of talents, and following the laws of higher education and talent market, translation specialty plans scientifically and rationally in accordance with the characteristics and trends of economic and social development, with its discipline and specialty enlightened.

Relying on the advantages of School of Foreign Language, the specialty grasps the course construction, perfects the course system and updates the course content, so as to move forward along the direction of "strong foundation, professional skills, and unifying knowledge and practice". At the same time, it is oriented to serve the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island. To meet the needs, we should take English-Chinese translation as a platform, enrich theoretical teaching, strengthen practical links, and strive to create a group of high-quality and versatile applied talents with solid theoretical foundation, strong practical ability and strong ability of teaching and research.

(5) Teaching staff

There are currently five full-time teachers in undergraduate majors, including three associate professors and two lecturers. In order to integrate resources and achieve complementary advantages, the specialty further relies on the faculty to carry out the basic stage of teaching. The Translation Department adheres to the idea of promoting scientific research through discipline construction and has made considerable progress in scientific research.

(6) Teaching facilities

School of Foreign Languages has invested special funds to establish teaching facilities such as simultaneous interpretation laboratory, translation training room and multi-functional film and television and video studio. In addition to the University library, the reference room of  the school has 3,905 kinds of professional books, with 115,543 volumes of Chinese and foreign books, which are open all day and are convenient for teachers and students to borrow. Computer Center (Language Center) has abundant learning and teaching resources. There are as many as 100 GB of online English teaching resources, including 70.5 GB of audio resources, 11.8 GB of video resources and 510 MB of text resources. It can basically meet the students' learning needs.

(7) Teaching achievements

The main achievements of teaching reform are as follows: First, there are three researches on teaching reform at provincial and municipal levels. Second, on the premise of closely linking the syllabus, we pay attention to practical teaching links and highlight the applicability, openness and diversity of teaching. In the process of teaching, students are emphasized as the main body, interactive teaching methods and modern educational technology are adopted to enhance students' interests, guide students' thinking, stimulate students' potential and enhance teaching effect. Regular lectures are held in various forms to broaden students' professional horizons. The assessment mode is diversified, and the combination of written, oral and computer test is implemented. Third, Special attention is paid to the establishment and construction of practice bases, and agreements on off-campus practice bases have been signed with translation companies, government offices for foreign affairs and overseas Chinese affairs, and enterprises and institutions such as Mission Hills Resort to meet students' practice needs.

(8) Achievements in scientific research

In recent years, the teachers have undertaken five provincial and ministerial projects, including one at the ministerial level, four at the provincial level, two monographs and more than 20 papers.

 

D. Department of Public Foreign Languages

1.1 General Survey of Foreign Language Department of University

The Foreign Language Department of the University has a core of 40 young and middle-aged professionals, including one doctoral degree teacher and 31 master's degree teachers. They graduated from Nanyang University of Technology, Singapore, Sheffield University, Essex University, York University, Toronto University, Canada, Shanghai University of Foreign Studies, Wuhan University and Beijing, respectively. Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Central China Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Zhejiang Normal University, Hunan Normal University, Guangxi Normal University, Hainan Normal University, Shenyang Normal University, Yunnan Normal University, Jilin University, Jinan University, Shandong University, Guangxi University, Southwest University, Yanshan University, Changsha University of Technology, Hainan University and more than 20 other domestic and foreign universities University. Among them, 1 professor, 2.5%; 9 associate professors, 22%; 26 lecturers, 65%; 4 assistants, 10%. There are 28 teachers with overseas study or visiting background. Ten new teachers have been added in the past five years.


1.2 Location and Target

Orientation: College English is a compulsory general course for non-English majors in our university. College English teaching is a teaching system with English language knowledge and applied skills, learning strategies and cross-cultural communication as its main contents, guided by foreign language teaching theory and integrated with various latest teaching modes and means.

Overall objective: The overall goal of College English teaching is to cultivate students'comprehensive English application ability, especially listening and speaking ability and autonomous learning ability, so that they can effectively communicate oral and written information in English in their future work and social contacts, and at the same time improve their comprehensive cultural literacy so as to meet the needs of social development and international exchanges in China.


1.3. Training objectives

The overall goal of undergraduate talents training in Hainan Normal University is to cultivate advanced applied talents with high quality, solid foundation, innovative spirit and strong practical ability to meet the needs of modernization construction. The main goal is to train new qualified teachers for the development of national education. At the same time, we should adhere to the pattern of multi-objective, multi-type and multi-specification personnel training. College English is a compulsory public basic course for college students. It aims to cultivate students'comprehensive English application ability, especially listening and speaking ability, so that they can effectively communicate oral and written information in English in their future work and social contacts, and at the same time enhance their comprehensive English application ability, autonomous learning ability and cross-cultural communication quality and ability. To meet the needs of China's economic development and international exchanges.

The training objectives of College English course are: to establish a teaching system and a personalized learning system suitable for our college English teaching practice, to establish a student-centered and teacher-led teaching concept, to actively update teaching concepts, to constantly update and improve teaching content and means, to boldly explore new teaching models, and to make full use of modern information technology and network. Resources can create more English practice environment for students.

 

E. Department of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures

Hainan Province is the largest marine province in China. It is located across the sea from Southeast Asian countries, geographically close, humanities, and folk customs. The overseas Chinese in Hainan live in Southeast Asian countries and have close contacts. Hainan Province and Southeast Asian countries have similarities in climate and culture. With the advancement of the national “Belt and Road” construction and the further development of Hainan International Tourism Island construction, as well as the need to build “one district, one port” in Hainan Province, Hainan needs talents who are familiar with the language and culture of Southeast Asian countries. The School of Foreign Languages of Hainan Normal University seized the opportunity and began planning for the establishment of the Southeast Asian Language and Culture Department in September 2018. Southeast Asian Language and Culture (Department) has selected Thai and Malay as the main language of instruction through professional argumentation and market research. At the same time, it teaches Southeast Asian countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia, Filipino, Myanmar, Malaysia) national profile and culture, training foreign language talents who are familiar with Southeast Asian national languages (2 types) and national conditions and culture in Southeast Asian.

The Southeast Asian language and culture major (Department) implements the 3+1 Sino-foreign cooperative education model, that is, students go to Southeast Asian countries in the third year of university (choose one in Thailand and Malaysia) to study for one year.

1. History of Southeast Asian Language and Culture Department:

The Department of Southeast Asian Language and Culture began planning and constructing in September 2018. With the help of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Hainan Normal University, the Maritime Silk Road Research Institute, and the Southeast Asian Research Center, the recruitment of required professional teachers will be completed in 2018-2020 and plans to start enrolling in 2021.

2. Training objectives:

Duration of study: four years of schooling; three to six years of study Duration: Bachelor of Arts (Thai or Malaysian, choose one)

Training Objectives: This major is trained to abide by laws and regulations, abide by social morality and professional ethics, work hard and work as a team. It is proficient in 6,000 Thai and Malaysian vocabulary. Master the basic knowledge of Southeast Asian languages (Thai, Malay), have strong Southeast Asian speaking ability, have a certain ability to read and understand in Southeast Asian languages, familiar with the customs of Southeast Asian countries, understand their culture, master the tourism industry, the management and service knowledge of hotels Industry, able to work independently in the tourism industry and hotel industry in Southeast Asian. Cultivate high-quality compound talents that can meet the needs of foreign-related management and services in the tourism and hotel industries.

Professional positioning: With the promotion of the national “Belt and Road” construction and the further development of the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island, and the construction of “One District, One Port” in Hainan Province. The bilateral cooperation between Hainan Province and Southeast Asian countries has made great progress in various fields, and the market opening is becoming more and more obvious. Under such an economic environment, our language is an important bridge for communication between China and ASEAN, and its importance has become increasingly prominent. In order to adapt to this economic trend, the department relies on Hainan Normal University's high-quality teaching resources to plan and build Southeast Asian language and culture majors in 2018. In 2021, it will open a major and recruit students. The goal and orientation of our professional development is to combine the characteristics of the regional economy to train the students of this major into high-level talents with regional leading and distinctive characteristics.
