History

The School of Foreign Languages of Hainan Normal University has a long history. In the spring of 1960, it opened the first English Department of Foreign Languages (specialist) in Hainan. In 1987, it opened the first English undergraduate major in Hainan Province. In 2003, it opened the Japanese major. This is the earliest Japanese undergraduate major in our province. Hainan Normal College was upgraded to Hainan Normal University in 2007. In June 2008, Hainan Normal University's School of Foreign Languages was approved to establish. The Foreign Languages School of Hainan Normal University has since embarked on a rapid development track to achieve leapfrog development. After years of hard work, our school obtained the qualification of master's degree in subject teaching (English) in 2013; the college opened a translation undergraduate program in 2016, and obtained the qualification qualification for translation master in 2017, and is currently heading towards foreign language and literature. The goal of the master's degree program is moving forward.

The college has three undergraduate majors including English language and literature, translation, and Japanese language and literature. The master's degree at the college has two master's degree programs, including subject teaching (English) and master's degree in translation. The School of Foreign Languages of Hainan Normal University is an important base for the cultivation and training of English teachers in secondary schools in Hainan Province. It also undertakes the task of cultivating high-level English and Japanese professionals, and undertakes the teaching of 9 graduates and undergraduates of other colleges and students of all levels. The university's foreign language teaching tasks include English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Korean, Russian, Thai, and Urdu.

The school has four research institutions and one teaching center, which are the English Language Education Research Office (the academic research base), the Foreign Languages and Literatures and Culture Research Institute (the school-level key humanities and social science research base), and the Hainan Maritime Silk Road. Research Base (Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in Hainan Province) and Research Center of the Philippines (Regional Research Center of the Ministry of Education). The teaching center is the University Foreign Language Network Teaching Center (provincial and ministerial level demonstration teaching center).

The most prominent specialty of the Foreign Languages Institute is English education. Our professional research institution in this area is the English Language Education Research Office. The English Language Education Research Office was founded by Professor Han Gang, a famous foreign language education expert in our province. In 2002, Professor Han proposed the reform plan of the English subject teaching curriculum, including the new curriculum objectives, content, curriculum practice model (3DR model) and evaluation system, and proposed the TTR model suitable for the professional training of primary and secondary school teachers in Hainan Province. The joint development of foreign language pre-service and vocational education has made positive efforts and exploration, which has aroused widespread concern and high attention in China.

While highlighting the characteristics of teacher education, in order to expand students' international horizons, we actively carry out regional and country research. In this respect, our professional research institutions are Hainan Maritime Silk Road Research Base and Philippine Research Center. The former is a provincial key humanities and social science research base in Hainan, the latter is the regional and national research center of the Ministry of Education. Both of them are important think tanks in Hainan Province. Professor Liu Huachu, the head of the Hainan Silk Road Research Base, and Professor Liu Feng of the Philippine Research Center are experts directly contacted by the Hainan Provincial Government.

In order to cultivate first-class teachers with humanistic qualities, the college encourages teachers to actively carry out basic research in humanities and social sciences. The corresponding professional research institution in this respect is the Institute of Foreign Languages, Literature and Culture. This is a school-level research base established after the first-level academic leaders of our institute arrived at the post. This research is mainly based on basic research in language, literature and culture, and provides basic support for the development of the dominant disciplines and featured disciplines.

Based on the above-mentioned research institutions, the college insists on promoting research and promoting education through research and development, and greatly improving the education and teaching level of our college.

The college has a faculty with a group of young and middle-aged teachers as its core and complementary professional structure. At the same time, Dr. Jin Yinxing of our school has published many articles in SSCI journals in the Journals of System, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, which marks the beginning of the internationalization of academic research in our college. In addition, Professor Chen Yihua published in the "Guangdong Social Science" paper "Clinical Modernity of Post-colonial Criticism" was reprinted by China's top academic abstract "Xinhua Digest" (2017, 24 issues), marking the academic development of our college to a new stage. This year is also a year in which the strength of teaching and research in our college has achieved a major breakthrough.
